Social media and other online platforms are fast becoming the most important space in democracy, including in elections. Social media provides a space for citizens to express their opinions; share and gather information; and communicate equally. However, in the same space, content inciting violence and hatred that can exacerbate polarization and amplify conflict continues to grow. Election disinformation continues to spread and obscure the facts. Dealing with such content has become a major challenge for an increasingly digitized society.
